Summary abstract of slaves, 1798.

In 1798, the United States government ordered states to assess taxes on everyone living in the country. In Hartford's first assessment district, Principal Assessor John Caldwell and his assistant assessors Nathan Whiting and James Wells, counted 21 slaves within the district, eleven of whom were exempted by tax and ten that were above aged 12 and under the age of 50 and who were subject to taxation.

James H. Wells was an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Kentucky from 1892 - 1895.
